Solving Drainage Woes: Utilising GIS Technology for Effective Planning
Naurangiya, a serene panchayat in the Motihari block, is grappling with a persistent challenge – a collapsed drainage system. With an elevation ranging from 279 to 319 feet, the residential area of this panchayat is predominantly flat, exacerbating the issue. However, the district administration, in collaboration with the MGNREGA team, initiated a survey last year to address the problem. This write up explores the adoption of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to plan multiple schemes aimed at resolving the drainage issue.
Drainage Woes and Muddy Roads
November, last year witnessed the MGNREGA team undertaking an extensive survey across the panchayat, revealing the plight of residents. The residential areas, as well as the main entrance road, were predominantly plagued by muddy conditions and waterlogging. These suboptimal conditions not only disrupted day-to-day activities for the residents but also posed a threat to public health.
GIS Technology to the Rescue
In a bid to effectively address the panchayat’s drainage problems, the district administration decided to employ GIS technology with block MGNREGA team, Motihari. This advanced system provides a powerful toolkit for selecting, analysing, and visualizing spatial data, making it the ideal solution for planning and executing infrastructure projects.
Planning Multiple Schemes
GIS technology facilitated the creation of a comprehensive plan to tackle Naurangiya’s drainage woes. By harnessing the capabilities of GIS, the team were able to identify critical areas requiring immediate attention. The following schemes were devised to revamp the drainage system:
Drainage Network Mapping:
GIS technology aided in mapping the existing drainage network, including the location of sewers, drains, and water bodies. This foundational step provided crucial insights into the existing infrastructure, assisting in planning subsequent steps effectively.
Topographic Analysis:
By utilizing GIS, an in-depth analysis of the topography of the panchayat was conducted. This analysis helped identify the areas that are most susceptible to waterlogging or inadequate drainage. Consequently, appropriate interventions were planned to address these problematic zones.
Designing Efficient Drainage Infrastructure:
GIS technology allowed the district administration to create an optimized drainage plan. Identifying the most viable routes for drainage channels, the plan aimed to ensure efficient water flow and minimize potential blockages. Additionally, it considered the elevation variations across the panchayat to ensure consistent drainage across all areas.
Collaboration and Resource Allocation:
GIS facilitated effective collaboration between different executing agency of MGNREGA and block officials involved in the planning process. By visualizing the entire drainage system on a map, it was easier to allocate resources and responsibilities. This enhanced coordination significantly expedited the implementation of the schemes.
There are eight schemes underway, and three have been approved. In all the schemes, attention has been given to elevation and all-weather roads. This way, the drainage system addresses the problem of water-logging and grey water throughout the village. Small culverts have been constructed across the road for the drainage outlets
Thanks to the successful implementation of the planned schemes this year, the drainage woes in Naurangiya panchayat have finally been addressed. As recent audits conducted have revealed, the improved status of the drainage system stands as a testament to the effectiveness of the initiatives undertaken. One of the major underlying issues hindering progress was encroachment, which had congested the drainage channels. However, the commendable efforts of the local villagers played a significant role in rectifying this problem. Recognizing the importance of a functional drainage system, they voluntarily came together to clear the encroachments, paving the way for smoother water flow and eliminating potential blockages. Their proactive participation displays a true sense of community ownership and dedication towards resolving their common concerns.
The adoption of GIS technology has proven to be a game-changer in addressing the drainage issues of Naurangiya panchayat. By leveraging its capabilities, the district administration successfully mapped the existing drainage network, analysed the topography, and designed an efficient infrastructure plan. Greater coordination among the various departments involved has accelerated the implementation of these schemes, bringing hope to residents who have long struggled with flooded roads and waterlogged areas. The application of GIS technology in the planning and execution of infrastructure projects showcases its immense potential in resolving complex challenges efficiently.
